The Siren’s Song

Spread for me

Your robe of sea

And cradle my head

In water

Lay for me

A weedy bed

And wake for me the sunrise

Carve for me

My likeness in the cliff face

Teach the gull to sing

The sunfish to write poetry

Fight for me a bull shark

Bring me back its jaw in your fist

Steal the breath off a diver’s back

Present to me pearls of air

It would be your honour

To do all this and die

Than endure another day

Without my demands
