Final Year at the Bristol House

A warm west wind

Brings the smell of nsima

To the red wall.

We painted the wall last summer,

Before the term began.

When we were finished-

Limbs ripe and ready to drop off-

We took up smoking,

(All agreeing that we could not have a red wall and not smoke)

And tried to tame the cat

From Number Nine, with a fish finger.

But the cat wouldn’t stay.

The sun was good to the red wall,

Kissing it regularly throughout September,

October, November, until December, then we all got

A chest infection and homesickness.
